~ FEATURED ARTICLE ~ Take That First Step Toward Success How many really great things have you ever wanted to do … but never started? That's a tough question. But let me ask you an even tougher one. What would it take for you to get started? That, my friends, is the $64,000 question (for those of you old enough to remember). Mahatma Gandhi once said "A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step." Millions of people have millions of ideas… and millions of good intentions… and millions of brainstorms… and millions of goals… and then millions of sales calls… and millions of follow-ups in which the first step is never taken. How many have you had? The answer ... probably too many. 3 factors that play a primary role in taking that first step:
1. The Roll Over Factor This one deals with your self-discipline and your personal dedication. It lies somewhere between getting things done and personal excellence. Let's look at an example: Your alarm clock goes off. You hit the snooze button and roll over. The alarm goes off again. And you hit the snooze button again and roll over. The alarm goes off again. Only this time you hit the "off" button and roll over. Each time you thought to yourself, "I really ought to get up, but I just don't feel like it." The Roll Over Factor is probably the easiest one to explain because each of us have done it … many times (perhaps since the first of the year ;-) You know you gotta do it. You know you should do it. You've been thinking about doing it. You made a goal to do it. But it just isn't getting done. And for some of us, we got out of bed and still didn't do it. 2. The I'm Gonna Factor This is the stepchild of the Roll Over factor. I'm gonna lose some weight. I'm gonna quit smoking. I'm gonna read at least one hour each day. I'm gonna take that course. I'm gonna start that business. I'm gonna achieve that goal. And then you never take the first step. One of the main reasons people don't take that first step is that they don't have a plan… they don't have a vision of the outcome. And they haven't figured out what benefits they would enjoy as a result of achieving success. Ok. List your own reasons. Take a moment and make yourself more determined by listing the reasons (a.k.a. - excuses) why you have failed to take the first step. Pretty pathetic, huh? Thought of any really good reasons? I can tell you for a fact that most of mine stink. I have no good reasons for not riding my bike each day. I have no good reasons for not eating healthier, better foods. I have no good reasons for not sticking with my plan to lose 20 pounds. Oh, I have 100 excuses - but not one good reason. And I bet you don't either. The good news is … every human being I know suffers from the I'm Gonna Factor. The better news is … if you want to differentiate yourself from the crowd, all you have to do is develop deeper self-discipline, a deeper desire, deeper determination and a game plan to begin. Add a vision of that "shout for joy" party you're going to have to celebrate the victorious end. Then, if you take that first step, you'll be in the minority --- at the top! And this leads me to… 3. The I Did It Factor For those of you in sales, did you ever notice that the easiest time to make a sale is right after you've just made one. You're on a roll. You're in that euphoric state of achievement. You did it! The secret to taking the first step is to visualize previous first steps, and combine that with remembering the feeling you had when you succeeded. That's the beginning of your self-confidence, self-determination and desire to take the first step. You can do it. ~ FEATURED RESOURCE ~ Leigh & Richard Beaty team up
